A useful estimate is not one impressive number. It is a visible set of assumptions about the problem, the people who use the system, the data it touches, and who will own it after launch. I have built products across healthcare, payroll, tax, ecommerce, logistics, and nonprofit infrastructure; the projects that stay healthy make those decisions before treating a feature list as a plan.

What changes custom software cost?
The largest driver is uncertainty. A focused workflow with one user role and a dependable data source is different from a platform with permissions, payments, migration, and several unreliable integrations. Security and accessibility are not optional extras, but sensitive data and regulated workflows require more evidence, review, and operational care.
Cost also follows product decisions: how many distinct jobs the first release must do, which exceptions matter on day one, what can remain manual, and how quickly real users can test the riskiest assumption. Good discovery reduces waste; it does not promise that every unknown disappears.
PixelsWithin’s pricing model
PixelsWithin begins with a fixed $500 Product Discovery. Ongoing senior-led product design and engineering is month to month: $6,000 per month for client-owned software, or $3,000 per month for managed software. The difference is ownership, not half as much attention. Read the complete terms on the pricing page.
Source-code ownership and maintenance
Client-owned software makes the repository and future handoff yours. That costs more because the work must support that independent ownership. Managed software costs less monthly; PixelsWithin retains and operates the source. It can be appropriate when continuity matters more than portability. In either model, maintenance includes reviewing dependencies, fixing defects, responding to platform changes, and deciding what evidence justifies the next feature.
Anonymized project shapes
- Focused internal workflow: a few months may be enough when the users and rules are available and integrations are limited.
- Customer web application: expect more time for authentication, permissions, responsive interaction, notifications, and operational tooling.
- Legacy modernization: budget first for understanding the old system, protecting data, and staging migration. Rebuilding screens is rarely the hard part.
These are shapes, not claimed averages. A calculator cannot see undocumented rules, a fragile vendor API, or the one report the business cannot operate without.
Turn the estimate into a decision
Compare the result with the value of the bottleneck and the cost of leaving it alone. Then review custom software development, relevant project stories, or start with Product Discovery.
